CD Projekt Hacked, Cyberpunk 2077 Code Held Ransom

CD Projekt, the company behind Cyberpunk 2077, has become the victim of a cyber attack. The company released a statement on Twitter addressing the situation, confirming that they were made aware of the hack yesterday, as well as a message that was left by the hackers.

The group responsible has obtained the source code for Cyberpunk 2077, Gwent, and both the final version and an unreleased version of The Witcher 3. They have also stolen important internal business documents from CD Projekt. The hackers have given the company 48 hours to come to an agreement with them, or else they will either sell or leak the source code and distribute the stolen documents to contacts that they have in the media.

CD Projekt has stated that they do not intend to negotiate with the group and have already started working with authorities to investigate and handle the situation. Though they are still investigating, player and user data was not stolen as far as they can tell.

This is yet another blow to CD Projekt following the disastrous launch of Cyberpunk 2077. The game launched in a notoriously poor state on PS4 and Xbox One, prompting them to issue an apology to players and promise refunds to those who bought the game. Shortly after, Sony pulled the game from the PlayStation Store and began offering refunds to people who bought the game digitally, something that they had never done before.

Just last month, CD Projekt co-founder Marcin Iwiński released video in which he apologized once again and publicly owned up for how the game released. He also gave a timeline for future patches, DLC, and updates that the game will be receiving throughout the rest of the year. With everything the company has gone through, let’s hope that they can resolve this manner swiftly and with as little damage caused as possible.
