Cuphead is Now Available on PS4

Studio MDHR’s Cuphead, the critically-acclaimed platformer styled after 1930s cartoons, is now available on PS4 for $19.99 through the PlayStation Store.

The surprise release was spoiled a bit, however. On Monday, prolific gaming deals tweeter Wario64 pointed that a tile for the game was showing up on international versions of the PlayStation Store, but nothing would load when it was pressed.

The announcement was clearly supposed to be made Tuesday when Geoff Keighley shared an Indie Studio Update with Marija Moldenhauer, Studio MDHR’s COO and lead inking artist. After the launch trailer for Cuphead’s PS4 version played, Moldenhauer also revealed that the game’s The Delicious Last Course DLC will be available on all platforms at the same time, but that the new content will release “when it’s ready.” Keighley and Moldenhauer also briefly discussed the Cuphead show that will be coming to Netflix, which will feature hand-drawn characters.

Cuphead has been a massive hit since it originally launched on PC and Xbox One in 2017 despite its tough-as-nails difficulty. It was nominated for a Game Award for best art direction that year and took home the trophy over the likes of Destiny 2, Horizon Zero Dawn, and Persona 5. A PS4 release for the game was certainly unexpected, because during the lead-up to the release of the Xbox One and PC versions, Studio MDHR stated that Cuphead was an Xbox One console exclusive and that “There will be no PS4 version.” That stance began to soften in 2019, however, when the game was released on Nintendo Switch.
