Call of Duty 2021 Rumored To Return To WWII

It’s another year which means another Call of Duty is on the way. If rumors are to be believed, this year’s premium installment will take the series back to World War II.

The news was first reported on by Modern Warzone whose sources tell them that the game is tentatively titled “WWII: Vanguard” and is in development at Sledgehammer Games. Eurogamer has corroborated this rumor with their own sources, though they were told that the current plan is to keep the name “WWII: Vanguard” for the official release later this year.

Modern Warzone also reports that this new Call of Duty will be an alternate history version of World War II, with the game taking place in the 1950s, years after the actual conflict ended. According to Eurogamer though, this is not the case and the game will be set in a traditional World War II timeline.

World War II isn’t new ground for Sledgehammer since their last entry in the franchise was 2017’s Call of Duty: WWII. It was pretty well received when it released and brought some interesting ideas to the franchsie such as needing medical kits to heal in the campaign and a persistent online space for players to spend time in before matches. When it came to the multiplayer, not all players were fans of some of the design choices that Sledgehammer made in an attempt to bring things back to basics. This eventually led to the company retooling the game’s Create-A-Class system and making other changes, something that was met with praise by players.

Things haven’t been the smoothest for Sledgehammer since that game’s release. They were originally supposed to be releasing a Call of Duty game last year, but development issues caused them to be removed from the project and replaced with Treyarch to create Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. Hopefully development on this year’s title has been smoother and will result in a great game for fans of the series.
