Blizzard Tempers Expectations for Diablo News at BlizzCon

BlizzCon 2018 is nearly upon us and the hype is reaching critical mass within the Blizzard community. This is especially true for Diablo fans, who are expecting a major announcement for the franchise during the convention’s opening ceremony on November 2.

It appears that Blizzard has taken notice of the speculation, however, and is urging everyone to calm down a bit.

In a post on the Diablo III website, the studio reconfirmed that multiple Diablo projects are in development and that they will be announced “when the time is right.” The post goes on to say that “We know what many of you are hoping for and we can only say that ‘good things come to those who wait,’ but evil things often take longer. We appreciate your patience as our teams work tirelessly to create nightmarish experiences worthy of the Lord of Terror.”

While Blizzard isn’t quite ready to reveal everything that it’s working on for the franchise, the studio still plans to share some “Diablo-related news” during the convention.

The community response to the post has been swift and about as negative as one would expect. Some people are saying that Blizzard deceived the community, while others think that the Diablo panel that immediately follows the opening ceremony will focus on the Nintendo Switch port of Diablo III: Eternal Collection. That seems unlikely, as the port will be released on BlizzCon’s opening day and includes the exact same playable content as the PC, PS4, and Xbox One versions of the game.

Despite Blizzard’s attempt to keep expectations in check, fans are still trying to predict how Diablo may be featured at BlizzCon. A popular theory is that Blizzard will announce remasters of Diablo and Diablo II that are similar in scope to StarCraft Remastered. Others believe that the studio may officially reveal the rumored Diablo Netflix series. We’ll have to wait and see if either is true, but one assumption seems safe for now: it sounds like we’ll have to wait a while to hear about the next core entry in the series.
