Blizzard Plans to Reveal Multiple Diablo Projects in 2019

After the disastrous reveal of Diablo Immortal at BlizzCon early last month, Blizzard is providing a little clarification on the future of its legendary action RPG franchise.

A few days after the company’s annual convention ended, Diablo Community Manager Brandy Camel started a thread on the Diablo III forum which stated that Blizzard was listening to the community in the wake of Diablo Immortal’s reveal. She asked that fans continue to provide constructive feedback, and that Blizzard would “follow up with further thoughts” in the future. A little over three weeks later, Camel returned to the thread and posted the following statement:

We continue to read feedback and our internal discussions are ongoing. We have many plans for Diablo across multiple projects which we’ll be revealing over the course of the coming year. We are eager to share more about all of our projects, but some will have to wait as we prefer to show you, rather than tell you, about them. It’s going to take some time as we strive to meet your expectations, but now, more than ever, we are committed to delivering Diablo experiences the community can be proud of.

There are a lot of possibilities for what these multiple Diablo projects could be, but it’s almost certain that one of them is the next core entry in the franchise. Last week, Kotaku’s Jason Schreier wrote a very in-depth article that interviewed 11 past and present Blizzard employees about the state of the studio and the Diablo franchise. In the piece, it is mentioned that the next mainline Diablo game started development as a Dark Souls-esque dungeon crawler in 2014, but was rebooted to something more familiar in 2016. The game’s art style will be more reminiscent of Diablo II, and the development team is “optimistic about the direction” that the game is going in.
