Ubisoft will reveal a teaser video for its new post-apocalyptic Far Cry game at the Game Awards 2018 tonight. This announcement also comes on the heels of the show’s host Geoff Keighley saying that more than 10 new games will also be announced at the ceremony.
Watch the teaser video below:
The teaser video shows the game will take place in a post-apocalyptic future. However, as far as content goes, it doesn’t reveal much in regards of what to expect. Ubisoft previously took the series away from the traditional modern timeline with Far Cry Primal, set in the Stone Age.
Unfortunately for Ubisoft, the Far Cry series is never far from controversy and criticism. The series received accusations of promoting politically racist undercurrents, from the ‘white saviour‘ protagonist of Far Cry 2 and Far Cry 3, to the box art for Far Cry 4.
Therefore, Ubisoft’s idea to set Far Cry 5 in America was a safe bet, right? Apparently not. It turns out that Joseph Seed’s cult emerging out of the extreme right-wing of North America is actually quite political. So much so, some thought it reflected the climate of politics in America today. However, Ubisoft deny Far Cry 5 makes any political statements.
Another issue Ubisoft face is how to create an antagonist like Vaas Montenegro in Far Cry 3. Vaas single-handedly delivered an intense gaming experience with his infamous speeches, and set the antagonist bar to a whole new level. A feat that Ubisoft have struggled to match in their subsequent games.
The new Far Cry game set in a post-apocalyptic world could be hugely successful for Ubisoft, especially as Fallout 76 struggles to generate positive reviews. Bethesda Game Studios, developers of the Fallout 76 (released last month) still receives complaints about its bugs, making it unplayable. If Ubisoft learns from Bethesda’s mistakes, create an antagonist to rival Vaas and be wary of ‘open-world fatigue’, it could possibly be a Game of the Year contender.
The Game Awards will air tonight at 5:30pm PT/8:30pm ET
