Twin Mirror is the newest upcoming title from DONTNOD Entertainment, the developer behind Life is Strange. In a similar format, Twin Mirror will be an episodic adventure, but the content and overall tone of the game, couldn’t be more different than Life is Strange. In its first developer diary, DONTNOD has revealed fresh details about what we can expect from the game when the first episode releases next year.
DONTNOD kicked off the diary stating that Twin Mirror will tell the story of Samuel Higgs, who is an investigative reporter. We learned that Higgs left his hometown of Basswood, West Virginia years prior, but upon learning that his best has died, he returns and is once again immersed in the lives of people he thought he’d left behind for good. From the small clip we’ve seen, these townsfolk are none too friendly either, with one of them boldly saying to Higgs, “I’d slash your tires, but that mean you couldn’t leave town.” So far, it seems one of the biggest ideas driving the game is that home is impossible to leave behind. According to the lead writer, Matthew Ritter, it “follows you everywhere.”
Basswood is typical of small, industrial towns in West Virginia that are near the Rust Belt- towns where “industry has gone away” and levels of unemployment are high. It’s natural for tensions and stress to run high, making this fictional town of Basswood a good place for an investigative thriller.
Twin Mirror’s narrative producer, Hélène Henry, confirms some ideas that we’ve already had about the game after viewing the first trailer. Henry explains in the dev diary that certain elements of it are reminiscent of the classic noir style of film, in which the main character is “at the mercy of a complex situation not entirely of his own making.”
The first episode of Twin Mirror, “Lost on Arrival”, will release for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC early 2019. There will be three episodes total.
