Survival Game The Long Dark Gets Retail Launch

Exploration-survival game, The Long Dark, has been out for a while now, having released back in 2014 in digital stores like Steam, Xbox, and PlayStation. 2.5 million players later, and the game is finally getting a retail launch in the coming weeks, publisher Skybound Games and UK developer Hinterland Studio announced today in a press release. Current fans and new players can pre-order the physical game starting today.

The Long Dark is beautifully bleak but also brutal, as players must find a way to navigate and survive in the unforgiving, frozen wilderness in the wake of an apocalyptic disaster. Due to the failure of technology, mankind is thrust back into a primal existence, left to deal with every major threat Mother Nature throws at them.

The game boasts three different modes- WINTERMUTE Story Mode, where the narrative unfolds; then there is Survival Mode, that features permadeath; and finally, players can complete missions in the Challenge Mode. Whichever mode you decide to play in, players’ survival is dependent on basic needs, like sleep, food, and water, as well as being able to fight off illness and be on guard with wildlife.

To date, The Long Dark has raked in great praise from players and two awards, including the 2018 Webby Awards for “Best Writing” and “Best Strategy-Simulation” game.

Alongside this announcement, Hinterland Studio released an August developer diary on its website, explaining that Episode Three of the game is on its way, and will release in December of this year. More details about Episode Three will be available in the coming months.

The retail editions of The Long Dark will be available on September 4th in North America, and September 7th in Europe and other territories. Physical copies will include a code for players to download the game’s Original Soundtrack and a limited edition Field Journal.

You can pre-order the game here.
