Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order Given Story Reveal Trailer

EA and Respawn have officially offered a substantial reveal trailer for their long developed and highly anticipated Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. Having first been announced at E3 2018, the new single-player game set in the hugely popular multi-media franchise was shown off through an in-engine story trailer during a live stream at Star Wars Celebration in Chicago. The trailer concluded with the game’s release date set for November 15, 2019.

The game is set between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope and stars Gotham actor Cameron Monaghan as outlawed Padawan, Cal Kestis. Cal has survived the Emperor’s brutal genocide of the Jedi order and is looking to complete his training in a galaxy that is intent on hunting him down. Other revealed characters include BD-1, Cal’s loyal droid whose appearance resembles that of a pet-sized AT-ST and Cere, a Jedi who is also on the run from the Empire. They are being pursued by the Second Sister, an elite force-wielder from the Empire who has been tasked with purging the galaxy of any surviving Jedi and who leads a ruthless squadron of Purge Troopers.

The trailer was entirely focused on delivering story and character details and therefore information on Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Oder’s gameplay is comparatively rather light. However, the game’s website promises an action-adventure game where the player can “hone lightsabre combat forms to refine striking, blocking, and dodging your enemies.” The game has already been confirmed to be in third-person. Interestingly, the game is being built in the Unreal Engine 4 instead of EA’s usually mandatory and notoriously difficult Frostbite engine.

Earlier in the liver stream, Respawn founder Vince Zampella stated that “(Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order) is a single player story game…no multiplayer, no microtransactions”. The studio’s strong stance on narrative explains why they lead with a story trailer and seems to be a direct response to 2017’s controversial Star Wars Battlefront II which was plagued by unbalanced in-game purchases and a half-baked single-player story.

A new Star Wars game from the developers of Titanfall and Apex Legends was rumoured as early as 2014 when God of War III director Stig Asmussen joined as creative director. It has been a long wait to get to this trailer, but Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order appears to be strong with the force and will no doubt complement the recently revealed Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker in a holiday season that will brimming with adventures in a galaxy far, far away.
