Sony Will Provide Notice Before PS5 Pre-Orders Go Live

The PlayStation community got whipped into a frenzy earlier this month when it was rumored that PS5 pre-orders would begin on July 13. As the date drew closer with no announcement from Sony, some speculated that the pre-orders would go live with no advance notice, thus making it even more difficult to secure a launch unit of the much-anticipated console. We still don’t know when Sony and its retail partners will launch reservations for the PS5, but we will definitely know the date in advance.

During yesterday’s first look at the DualSense controller, Geoff Keighley asked SIE Senior Vice President Eric Lempel about the rumors, and when gamers can expect pre-orders to officially begin. Lempel said that Sony “had nothing to do” with the speculation about pre-orders, but that they “won’t happen with a minute’s notice.” In a direct message to viewers of the DualSense stream, Lempel said “we’re going to, at some point, let you know when you can pre-order PlayStation 5. So please don’t feel like you have to go run out and line up anywhere until you receive official notice on how that will work.”

While Lempel didn’t provide any information on how or when the pre-order date will be announced, it’s safe to assume we’ll hear about it when the PS5’s price, release date, and launch lineup are confirmed. It’s hard to predict if that information will be provided in a video stream, PlayStation Blog post, or some other form of communication, as Sony has spoken to customers in a variety of ways this year.

A report was recently released that discusses Sony’s attempt to bolster PS5 production output. The company planned to manufacture 5 to 6 million consoles by the end of March 2021, but with the possibility of increased demand in the face of possible fall coronavirus lockdowns, it hopes to double that amount by the end of 2020.
