Sony Reveals PlayStation Studios Brand, Will Launch with PS5

This morning Sony revealed PlayStation Studios, the new brand for its first party exclusive games, which will launch alongside the PlayStation 5 later this year. The reveal video for PlayStation Studios highlights some of the platform’s most recognizable characters, including: Aloy from Horizon Zero Dawn; Kratos from God of War; Ellie from The Last of Us; and Nathan Drake from Uncharted.

Sony Interactive Entertainment currently owns thirteen first party studios around the world. Among them are: Naughty Dog (The Last of Us, Uncharted); Insomniac Games (Marvel’s Spider-Man); SIE Bend Studio (Days Gone); and Santa Monica Studio (God of War). In a statement to gamesindustry.biz, Sony Interactive Entertainment senior vice president and head of global marketing Eric Lempel said, “We’ve never had any problem getting people to play these games. They’re usually critically acclaimed, award-winning franchises that are games of the year, but for the average consumer, it’s not always clear what games come directly from our Worldwide Studios.”

The new PlayStation Studios brand aims to help with that issue, and to unite all of the exclusives under one, recognizable umbrella. Lempel also explained how the aim of the new brand is to make the consumer understand that when they see it, they know they’re in for a “robust, innovative, deep experience that they’ve come to expect from games coming from PlayStation.”

PlayStation 4 titles will also receive the PlayStation Studios branding, but it won’t happen in time for The Last of Us Part II and Ghost of Tsushima, both of which are launching this summer. It also will not happen in time for the launch of Horizon Zero Dawn on PC.
