I’m sure most of us knew it was only a matter of “when” and not “if” PlayStation 5 would ever see the light of day. Rumors have swirled for years about the PlayStation 4′s successor- what it will look like, what features will be included- but it wasn’t until earlier this week that Sony finally confirmed that a next-gen console was going to be the company’s next move in the games industry. There was just no mention if this console would, in fact, be called “PlayStation 5”.
In a recent interview with the Financial Times, Sony’s CEO Kenichiro Yoshida simply explained, “At this point, what I can say is it’s necessary to have a next-generation hardware.” Despite this vague confirmation that a new system is on the horizon, everything is still pretty tight-lipped at this point and probably will be for a while, as Sony is still riding the success of 2017’s major releases like God of War, Detroit: Become Human and Marvel’s Spider-Man.
With that in mind, it’s difficult to say for certain what a next-gen console for Sony will actually look like. In comparison to Microsoft, which sees a promising future in cloud-based gaming and streaming for future Xbox hardware, Sony’s stance on the subject has been a little muddier, and the company hasn’t been vocal about building its next console around these features.
As the PlayStation 4 has been a massive success this generation, Sony could very well play it safe next gen and simply enhance the features that made the PS4 and the Pro powerhouse consoles.
