Rumor: Diablo Animated Series in Development at Netflix

If a recent Twitter slip-up is to be believed, an animated Diablo series may be coming to Netflix at some point in the future.

PCGamesN is reporting that Andy Cosby, the co-founder of BOOM! Studios and co-writer for the upcoming Hellboy film reboot, tweeted that he is “in final talks to write and show-run the new DIABLO animated series for Activision and Netflix.” The tweet was deleted, but not before eagle-eyed denizens of the internet could take a screen capture of it.

Aside from Cosby’s tweet, there’s enough precedent with both companies to see how this could be possible. Blizzard frequently brings its game properties to different types of media, including books, comics, and manga. In 2016, the studio teamed up with Universal to release Warcraft, a feature film based on the RTS/MMO series of the same name. And when it comes to Netflix, the streaming service has already launched a Castlevania animated series, with the second season slated to release late next month.

The activity surrounding the Diablo franchise is hitting a fever pitch. Back in August, Blizzard confirmed that “multiple Diablo projects are in the works.” One of those ended up being a Nintendo Switch port of Diablo III: The Eternal Collection, which is now scheduled to release on November 2nd. Book of Adria: A Diablo Bestiary will release on October 15th, and a Titan Comics-developed comic series will arrive at an unspecified date.

If the animated series is real, we could hear about it at BlizzCon, which will take place on November 2-3 in Anaheim, California. Blizzard typically makes major announcements during the opening ceremony, which will happen at 11AM on Friday, November 2nd. The opening ceremony will be streamed live for free on a variety of streaming platforms, as well as on Blizzcon.com. In addition, the BlizzCon Virtual Ticket will be available for Blizzard fans who want to keep up on everything that happens at the convention.
