In a post on the PlayStation Blog, Psyonix Vice President of Publishing Jeremy Dunham announced that the PS4 version of Rocket League has entered the PlayStation Cross-Play Beta Program. As of today, players on PS4, PC, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch can play random matchmade games against each other in all online modes.
Cross-platform play is enabled by default, but those who only want to compete against players on their own platform can disable the feature in the game’s options menu. The post also mentions that cross-platform parties will be coming in the game’s first 2019 update.
Rocket League has had a fragmented player base for quite some time, so today’s announcement is great news for fans of the action sports game. Cross-play between PS4 and PC players has been available since the game’s launch in 2015, but when the Xbox One version released in 2016, players on that platform could not interact with those on Sony’s console. Once the Nintendo Switch version released in November 2017, players on Switch, Xbox One, and PC could play against each other, but PS4 gamers were still limited to cross-play with PC users.
Sony’s stance on cross-platform play with competing consoles changed last year, however, as Fortnite took over the gaming landscape. While gamers on PC, mobile, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch could play the battle royale game against each other, Sony was limiting PS4 users to cross-play with PC and mobile. When asked why PlayStation didn’t want to play nice with the other console manufacturers, Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida said that PS4 was “the best place to play.” The response was met with sharp criticism from gamers, who upped their pleas on social media for Sony to change the policy. The company ended up enabling full cross-platform play for Fortnite in late-September, and stated that additional titles would get the feature on a case-by-case basis.
