During The Game Awards it was revealed that third-person rougelike Returnal will release on March 19, 2021. A new gameplay trailer was also released for the game.
A new post on the PlayStation Blog describes Returnal as follows: “In Returnal you get to dive deep into the mind of Selene, an Astra space scout trapped in a hellish loop of endless resurrection while trapped on a hostile planet. The roguelike formula mixed with exploration platformer elements allow for a unique way to explore the planet and continue the battle she is fighting.”
The post also mentions that the game will make use of the DualSense’s haptic feedback to provide increased environmental awareness. Additionally, the controller’s adaptive triggers will allow players to aim down sights and fire weapons using a single trigger.
Returnal is being developed by Housemarque, a studio best known for a variety of arcade-style games including Resogun, Super Stardust HD, and Nex Machina. The Finland-based development team was previously working on a battle royale game called Stormdivers, but it was put on hold so Housemarque could work on its “most ambitious and biggest game to date,” which ended up being Returnal. Considering that Fortnite and Call of Duty: Warzone are absolutely dominating the battle royale space right now, it seems like the studio made the right decision.
