IO interactive, the Denmark-based developer/publisher of the Hitman franchise, has announced Project 007 (working title). According to the game’s official website, “players will step into the shoes of the world’s favorite Secret Agent to earn their 00 status in the very first James Bond origin story.” A teaser trailer for the game can be viewed below.
It’s also worth noting that the game will tell a “wholly original Bond story,” so it won’t be connected to next year’s No Time to Die or any other 007 film.
It seems like Project 007 is relatively early in development. A release date for the game wasn’t discussed, and the official website states that IO is “currently recruiting elite talent from around the world to join the team that will build out this exciting and unique gaming title.” A press release provided to Push Square mentions that Project 007 will run on IO’s proprietary Glacier Engine and is “targeting ‘modern systems and platforms.'”
In the meantime, IO Interactive is putting the finishing touches on Hitman 3, which launches on January 20, 2021 for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC, with streaming options appearing on Nintendo Switch and Google Stadia.
