PlayStation Classic Announced, Releases This December
Sony has officially announced the PlayStation Classic, a smaller version of its first console that originally released in 1994. It will cost $99.99, and will launch on December 3rd. Pre-orders are still available at select retailers, including Walmart and GameStop, but Amazon and Best Buy are sold out at the time of writing.
Much like Nintendo’s NES Classic and SNES Classic systems that it took inspiration from, the PlayStation Classic will come pre-loaded with a selection of games that will not be expandable. It will include 20 games in total, but Sony has only revealed the first five, which are the following:
- Final Fantasy VII
- Tekken 3
- Ridge Racer Type 4
- Jumping Flash
- Wild Arms
The aforementioned games will be included with every PlayStation classic worldwide, but the remaining games will vary between Japan and western territories. Gematsu is reporting that Sony Interactive Entertainment Senior Vice President Hiroyuki Oda told Japanese publication Famitsu that “each title is being carefully selected on the basis that it is highly popular, has a lot of fans, and is representative of PlayStation.”
The system will include an HDMI cable and USB cable, but an AC adapter will have to be purchased separately. Thankfully, most people have a quite a few of those laying around these days. It will also come with two controllers, but these will be the standard type that were included when the PlayStation originally launched, and not the DualShock analog controllers that were introduced in 1997. That means that Ape Escape, which required a DualShock to play, will not be one of the fifteen remaining games to be announced for the system.
In addition to the remaining game selection, there are still a few details that we don’t have for the PlayStation Classic. The NES and SNES Classic systems included picture filters, backgrounds, and save states, but we’re not sure if any of those will be included with this system. We’ll probably hear more about the various features of the PlayStation Classic when Sony sheds more light on the included game selection.
