Pete Hines Says There Will “Absolutely” be a Wolfenstein III

In a recent interview with Metro, Bethesda’s vice president of PR and marketing Pete Hines discussed the upcoming Fallout 76, the market for single-player games, and he ever-so-casually dropped the news that Wolfenstein III is coming.

The writer of the interview briefly touched on the possibility of a third game, saying, “Ultimately I just want you to guarantee there’ll be a Wolfenstein III, because I want to see how it ends.” To this, Hines responded saying, “Yeah, sure. Absolutely we’re making a Wolfenstein III. They said on stage that they’re taking a break from the larger story to do this thing [Wolfenstein: Youngblood]. But we all have to see how that ends.”

Wolfenstein II: The New Colossuswhich released last year, put players back in the POV of B.J. Blazkowicz as he launched a resistance against Nazis across America. At Bethesda’s E3 2018 showing, a standalone sequel Wolfenstein: Youngblood was announced, which will focus on B.J.’s twin daughters. While Youngblood will certainly give fans of the series something to look forward to in 2019, it’s good to know there is another major game in the works.

When the topic of the industry’s shift toward single-player titles arose, especially after the massive success of God of War, Hines explained the biggest challenge any game developer and publisher has is proving “a value proposition to your customer.” In other words, players have to be convinced you’re making something worth playing. He went on to say that single-player games are part of who Bethesda is, but at the same time it can be difficult to convince people to stop playing a game like Fortnite or Overwatch in favor of a shorter experience. On a more positive note, though, Hines believes Bethesda has good answers to those difficult situations when they arise.
