Overwatch Game Director Discusses Possibility of Cross-Play on Consoles

In a recent interview with Eurogamer, Overwatch game director Jeff Kaplan spoke at length about the multiplayer shooter. Some of the topics touched on were the number of heroes that would be added to the game in the coming years- “we have our next six heroes planned out right now”; if an Overwatch Netflix series would be feasible- “anything is within the realms of possibility”; and most notably, if Blizzard was working to enable PlayStation 4-Xbox One cross-play for Overwatch now that Sony has loosened its stance against the feature.

When asked about Overwatch cross-play, Kaplan had this to say:

We’re super excited about what’s going on with cross-play in all sorts of different games, from Rocket League to Fortnite, and we are constantly in discussions with first-parties, Microsoft and Sony, to see where they’re at and gauge where their temperature is at. It’s something that would be very exciting for us to pursue.

When asked if this is something the company is actually pursuing right now, Kaplan simply said, “We’re definitely having conversations that we’re interested in the thought of it.” He went on to note the difficulties when enabling cross-play, and how it’s a difficult process from a technical, game design, and business relationship standpoint.
