No Man’s Sky Gets Creepy with “The Abyss” Update

No Man’s Sky seems to be in a solid place, given its most recent (and biggest) update titled NEXT, which brought a host of new features (including multi-player) into the game. With the addition of NEXT and the release of free, weekly content, developer Hello Games is slowly turning No Man’s Sky into a game that players will be returning to for a long time. This time last year, that’s something that would have seemed impossible, given the game’s underwhelming reception since its release in 2016.

The updates don’t seem to be slowing down, either, because next week Hello Games is releasing a free update titled The Abyss.

In a note on the No Man’s Sky site, Sean Murray briefly- and I mean briefly- touched on what we can expect with The Abyss. He explained, “We’ve called it The Abyss, because it focuses on some of the eerier elements of No Man’s Sky, in keeping with the theme of this season.” While that doesn’t tell us much, it’s worth noting this update is being developed by by a separate team other than the one that releases the weekly updates.

The NEXT update introduced new NPCs and new creatures, including the Burrowing Monstrosity known as a Biological Horrors. The creatures spawn when Whispering Eggs are destroyed, and will respawn and lunge at players until a safe haven, like an Abandoned Building or your ship, is reached. The Burrowing Monstrosities are, to quote Murray, one of the “eerier elements of No Man’s Sky”,  so it wouldn’t be too far-fetched to think The Abyss update could be centered these creatures. Or maybe the update will focus solely on galaxy exploration/planetary travel? Space is terrifying, guys.

Any thoughts on what the update will be about? Let us know what you think!

The Abyss update will release the week of October 29th for consoles and PC.
