Nintendo Switch OLED Model Officially Announced

After many months of rumors and speculation, Nintendo has officially announced the Nintendo Switch OLED Model. Set to release in time for the holiday season on October 8, this new Switch model will cost $349 and be available in both black-and-white, and red-and-blue.

The Nintendo Switch OLED Model only has a few notable upgrades from the current iteration of the Switch. First is the addition of a larger, OLED display. Coming in at 7-inches, the new screen is a fair bit bigger than the original Switch’s 6.2-inch screen. This larger screen size will nicely complement the improved colors that come with having an OLED display.

Then there’s the altered kickstand on the back of the Switch. Instead of being small and flimsy, the new kickstand spans the entire back of the device and offers a wider range of flexibility for propping up the Switch. The Nintendo Switch OLED Model will also have enhanced speakers, 64 GB of internal memory (the current Switch only has 32 GB), and the dock will have a LAN port built into it, so owners won’t have to buy a separate accesory to set up a wired internet connection for their Switch.

What this new Switch model doesn’t feature are improved screen resolutions, a better battery, and better performance. All of it’s internal specs are the same as on the current Switch, something that’s sure to be disappointing for those that were hoping for a substantial improvement from the Nintendo Switch OLED Model.

Rumors about an upgraded Switch have been circulating for some time, with reports stating that the device would support 4K resolutions. This new Nintendo Switch OLED Model may not be the “Switch Pro” that many were hoping for or expecting, but there’s always the possibility that such a device is in the works and will come out at some other point in the future. For now, current Switch owners will have to decide if the new device’s features are enough to justify upgrading their hardware. For anyone who doesn’t already own a Switch, the choice is crystal clear.
