New Shadow of the Tomb Raider Trailer Shows off Deadly Exploration

Ever since the official reveal of Shadow of the Tomb Raider back in March, along with plenty of news at E3 2018, and the recent announcement the game’s just gone gold (yes, that was fast), it seems we’ve been inundated with news about Lara Croft’s next adventure. Today is no different, because the official Tomb Raider YouTube channel teased a short video of the tombs that players can expect to encounter in this upcoming game.

The tombs go by pretty quickly, but there is no denying they seem to be more of a focal point this time around than in the previous games in the reboot series. Tomb Raider (2013), for example, put a large emphasis on Lara’s origin story and the obstacles she overcame to become the Lara Croft, but as a result many tombs across the island of Yamatai were pushed into the background and players’ exploration of them wasn’t highly encouraged. Similarly, in Rise of the Tomb Raider (2015), the tombs carried a lackluster quality and the puzzles inside of them felt like they were added almost as an afterthought.

Now, though, Eidos Montreal seems to be bringing the tombs back into the spotlight in a major way. Each one showcased throughout the trailer looks every bit as dangerous as one might expect from ancient, crumbling tombs. A couple of the shots also carry a vibe that’s reminiscent of some of the classic tombs from the series way back on PlayStation 2. The official video description explains, “Delve into the terrifying tombs of Shadow of the Tomb Raider. Featuring deadly traps and brutal puzzles, Lara must persevere through her darkest hour.”

Shadow of the Tomb Raider will release on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on September 14th. The game is currently available for pre-order. Keep up with all your Tomb Raider news here, and check out the Deadly Tombs trailer below.
