New PlayStation Plus Video Pass Service Leaked

It appears as if Sony will soon be announcing a new benefit coming to PlayStation Plus. As reported by VGC, a logo for a “PlayStation Plus Video Pass” service was posted on Sony’s website. On the company’s Polish website, a description of the service was posted as well, though the page is now gone.

The description was translated by VGC. “A new benefit available for a limited time on PlayStation Plus… PS Plus Video Pass is a trial service active 22.04.21 – 22.04.22. The subscription benefit is available to PS Plus users in Poland.” It’s not clear whether or not this new service will be available worldwide or only in a specific region.

While we don’t have official confirmation yet, it appears to be bringing together different Sony produced media as an extra benefit for PlayStation Plus subscribers. Before the page was taken down, VGC caught a picture of the advertisement for the service which displays the films Venom, Zombieland: Double Tap, and Bloodshot.

For a while, people have wondered if Sony would come up with their own answer to Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass service. Back in November, SIE President and CEO Jim Ryan did confirm to TASS that the company has something in the works, but didn’t elaborate on what it was. More recently, God of War creator David Jaffe said on a livestream that Sony was “working on a counterpunch” to Game Pass. However, I think it’s unlikely that this new video service is Sony’s response to Game Pass.

What this appears to be is simply an extra benefit for PlayStation Plus subscribers that makes the service more valuable. Sony has a number of great movies that it’s produced over the years, with the Spider-Man films arguably being their biggest ones. In addition to that though, Sony owns the anime streaming service Funimation and is in the process of adding another one to its belt with their purchase of Crunchyroll. Both of those services alone would be a great value addition for PlayStation Plus. Bringing their other film and television productions into the mix makes this “PlayStation Plus Video Pass” seem pretty great. If they truly intend to compete with Game Pass though, Sony will have to do something on the games side of things to level the playing field and stay truly competitive.
