Well, it’s about time. After over half a year of leaks, rumors, and speculation, Microsoft has finally confirmed the existence of the Xbox Series S. The smaller, more affordable offering from Xbox in their Next-Gen lineup. See the official tweet below.
Microsoft has had two of the worst kept secrets in gaming this year- the Xbox Series S and the long-rumored Fable game in development at Playground Games. Similar to the Xbox One S, the Series S is a less powerful, smaller version of Microsoft’s next-generation console. Another thing worth noting is that Series S will not have a disc drive, meaning that all your games will need to be purchased digitally from the Microsoft Store. The store is also getting a re-design for the next generation of consoles.
With this announcement, Microsoft is the first to release a price for a next-generation console. The price of the Xbox Series X, as well as both versions of the PlayStation 5, is still unknown. This has absolutely put the pressure back on Sony to announce new Playstation 5 details, such as price, release date, and pre-order information. I will be very curious to know if Sony will come close to the price of the Xbox Series S, as $300 for a next-generation console is very compelling. Especially for a machine that can run games in up to 1440p at 120fps.
The Xbox Series X and Series S are set to release this November. According to an article from Windows Central, the Series X will launch at $499. Be sure to follow Xbox on Twitter, and read about the recent news about the Xbox Series X here.
