We are inching ever closer to the January 2019 release for Kingdom Hearts III, and the marketing machine for the highly anticipated RPG is starting to pick up speed. Square Enix has released a new trailer for the game ahead of Tokyo Game Show, which starts on September 20th.
The trailer gives us an extended look at the Big Hero 6-inspired San Fransokyo world, where Sora teams up with Baymax and Hiro to take on the Heartless. It also features glimpses of other worlds, some gummi ship action, and all of the melodrama fans have come to expect from the franchise.
In addition to the new trailer, Square Enix has also revealed the final box art for the game, which was illustrated by series director Tetsuya Nomura. The PS4 and Xbox One versions of the box art can be viewed below.
Fans have been waiting for Kingdom Hearts III for a very long time. The game was initially announced during Sony’s E3 2013 press conference, and was in development for years without any indication of when it would come out. A vague 2018 release window was set last year, and at E3 this year, the game was delayed to January 2019. More specifically, it will release on January 25th in Japan and on January 29th for the rest of the world.
Even though this is the third “core” game in the Kingdom Hearts franchise, the series has seen several more spin-offs on portable consoles and mobile phones since its initial release in 2002. Despite having a reputation for a story that’s extremely hard to follow, the series’ union of Final Fantasy and Disney characters has attracted a large and loyal fanbase.
For those looking to get caught up with the adventures of Sora and his friends before January, the easiest way to do so is on PS4. Two releases, Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 + 2.5 ReMIX and Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue, include all of the games and cinematics needed to be ready for Kingdom Hearts III. There is also a bundle on the PlayStation Network, the Kingdom Hearts All-In-One Package, which includes the entire series for $99.99.
