ICYMI: Steve From Minecraft is Coming to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

The newest fighter coming to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has been revealed, and it’s a shocking inclusion to say the least. Steve from the worldwide phenomenon Minecraft will be joining the fray and he’s not alone. Also coming with him from Minecraft are Alex, Zombie, and Enderman. Each of these characters will serve as Echo Fighters for Steve, characters that have the same moveset as the original one, just with a different appearance. He follows Min Min as the second Challenger Pack as part of the Fighters Pass Vol. 2.

Steve’s reveal trailer was short, showcasing his very distinct abilities that will be sure to set him apart from the rest of the game’s roster. From what I could gather from the trailer, Steve will be able to craft different weapons from Minecraft, such as a sword, for use in fights. He can also mine the stages to gather building materials. There are a few clips in the trailer where Steve is shown placing blocks around the stage, so perhaps this can only be done if you have enough building materials. One move that Steve has gives him wings that allow him to fly, so this could potentially be his recovery ability. Other moves shown in the reveal trailer include using a fishing rod to grab enemies and placing TNT that detonates when a plate is stepped on.

We also got a look at the Minecraft stage that will be coming to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Based off what we saw, it looks like the biome of the stage will be different each time you play. Following the reveal trailer, game director Masahiro Sakurai gave a brief presentation explaining how it was very difficult to incorporate Steve into the game. According to Sakurai, all the stages had to be reworked in order to accommodate the blocks that Steve is able to build and place down. That in combination with his unique attacks and the programming required for him made putting Steve in the game very difficult.

Sakurai ended the presentation by announcing that we’ll be getting a deeper look into Steve’s moveset on October 3rd at 7:30AM PT/10:30AM ET, prior to Minecraft Live.
