Here’s How the Anthem VIP Demo Differs from the Live Game

We’re a little under a week away from the launch of the Anthem VIP demo and BioWare Executive Producer Mark Darrah went to Twitter to explain how it will differ from the live game that releases on February 22.

One thing that immediately stood out is that the demo will start a little later in the game and won’t include its opening moments. BioWare has built its legacy on plot-focused games like the Mass Effect trilogy and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, so it’s not too surprising that gamers will have to wait until the full game launches to see how the story begins. Darrah also mentioned that the demo will be a little less polished than the full game, as it has “6 weeks less bug fixes.” The demo is also balanced differently than the full game, with Darrah later clarifying that it is “easier in general.”

Darrah also explained what he meant by the lack of a “pilot picker” in a reply to a fan question. Players will only be able to change their Javelin pilot’s sex in the demo, but the full game will also include facial customization features.

In addition to giving us a few details about the demo, Darrah reiterated that Anthem’s microtransactions will be limited to cosmetic items, with BioWare Lead Producer Michael Gamble chiming in later to mention that no loot boxes will appear in the game. EA previously announced that the game’s story DLC will be free as the publisher continues to mend fences with gamers after its disastrous handling of 2017’s Star Wars Battlefront II.

The Anthem VIP demo will run from January 25-27 on PS4, Xbox One, and PC and can only be accessed by those who have pre-ordered the game or have subscribed to EA’s Origin Access or EA Access services. According to a post on EA’s official website, the demo will launch at 9:01am PST on January 25 and will end at 6pm PST on January 27. Players will be able to pre-loard the demo a few days ahead of time but a specific date wasn’t provided. An open demo will be available on all three platforms from February 1-3.
