Your Guide to January’s Major Game Releases

No one can deny that 2018 was a huge year for games. We saw the release of some of this console generation’s most anticipated titles like God of War and Red Dead Redemption 2, as well as new indie favorites like Dead Cells and Celeste. Though 2018 has come and gone, 2019 looks to be delivering the same level of energy and anticipation, with upcoming games like Anthem, Days Gone, and rumors that Death Stranding could be releasing sooner than we think.

We’ve listed some of the biggest video game releases that are kicking off the new year.

January 7th – 13th

1/10: Bury me, my Love (PC, Switch)
1/10: Everything (Switch)
1/10: Aftercharge (PC, Xbox One)
1/11: New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe (Switch)
1/11: Hitman HD Enhanced Collection (PS4 Xbox One)

Originally released in 2017 for mobile devices, indie game Bury me, my Love is finally headed to PC and Nintendo Switch this January. It’s a text messaging adventure game that details the powerful story of a Syrian refugee’s journey to safety in Europe.

Also releasing this week is New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, which includes Mario Bros. U and a more intense version of New Super Luigi U.

January 14th – 20th

1/15: Vane (PS4)
1/15: The Walking Dead: The Final Season Episode 3: Broken Toys
1/15: Smoke and Sacrifice (PS4, Xbox One)

PlayStation 4 exclusive Vane moves between the shifting perspectives of a bird and a child, as they both seek to unravel the mysteries of a barren landscape. As players progress through the game, the world will react to your actions and evolve into something new.

Skybound Games took over the development of The Walking Dead: The Final Season after the unexpected closure of Telltale Games left production of the game up in the air. Episode 3: Broken Toys will be the penultimate episode before the season comes to its conclusion.

January 21st – 27th

1/24: Life is Strange 2 – Episode 2: Rules (PC, PS4, Xbox One)
1/25: Resident Evil 2 Remake (PS, PS4, Xbox One)

Resident Evil 2 Remake took us by surprise when it was officially revealed during Sony’s E3 2018 conference. Highly-regarded as one of the best games in the series, Resident Evil 2 Remake is the classic horror game we all remember and love from, while having been re-imagined for this generation.

January 28th – End of Month

1/29: Kingdom Hearts 3

The release of Kingdom Hearts 3 has, quite literally, been anticipated for the last thirteen years, ever since Kingdom Hearts 2 came out on PlayStation 2 in 2005. While there have been several games released in the series over the last decade for varying consoles, those games have primarily focused on the sub-plots of the overarching (and complex) story that is Kingdom Hearts.

Kingdom Hearts 3 will be the final entry in the Dark Seeker Saga, which has followed Sora, Donald, and Goofy’s battle with Master Xehanort for control of Kingdom Hearts and the various worlds throughout the series. According to Kingdom Hearts 3’s director, Tetsuya Nomura, the game will pick up directly after the events of Dream Drop Distance.

The game releases this month are getting 2019 off to a great start. If you haven’t done so already, be sure to check out some of the games we can’t wait to play this year.
