Godfall was the first game announced for the Playstation 5, but ever since its announcement last year, we haven’t gotten a good idea of how the game plays or what combat will be like. That changed today during Sony’s State of Play, as the game ended the show with a deep dive into combat.
Game director Keith Lee started off with a brief overview of the game, describing Godfall as a “looter slasher” with “intense action, satisfying moment-to-moment combat, and robust loot progression systems.” Importantly, all the loot and gear is unlocked through gameplay. There are no micro-transactions, and “no waiting for content.” Everything is available at launch. The game can be played solo or online with up to two other people. As for the world, it’s split into four elemental realms: air, water, earth, and fire.
Things then focused solely on the combat. Godfall is driven by player skill as well as the loot that you have. It also strongly encourages and rewards a more aggressive play style. As for weapons, there are five different weapon classes: longswords, dual blades, polearms, two-handed war hammers, and two-handed great swords. Each weapon class has unique move sets and play styles, and you’ll unlock new weapons throughout the game.
Today’s presentation went in depth on the longswords and the dual blades. The dual blades are the fastest class in the game and are best against single or unarmored targets, whereas the longswords are your all-around balanced weapon. Shields are also available for use in combat, allowing you to parry or use it for counterattacks if done correctly. You can also throw the shield at enemies as well, allowing you to hit targets from a distance and close the gap between you and them.
While not everything about the game’s systems was revealed today, it was announced that more details on loot and progression would be coming soon.
