Ubisoft released a 42-second teaser trailer for
Far Cry 5 today, and just because it isn’t long, does not mean we don’t have a lot to unpack.
The Far Cry franchise has taken us from Africa to Bangkok to the fictional, Asian country of Kyrat. Now, for the fifth installment in the series, it looks like we’re bringing things a little closer to home in the Midwestern United States.
Hope County, Montana, to be exact.
While Hope County may be just as fictitious as Kyrat, the crisp, environmental shots look deeply rooted in the real landscape of some parts of the Midwest. The calm streams, the massive rolling fields, the guy running for his life (wait, what?) look to already be showing off the sandbox style of gameplay that the Far Cry series has been known for.
After snapshots of the land, we cut to a church, which is (quite literally) situated in the middle of nowhere with an odd-looking symbol hanging from the cloth on the front. Though it’s a short pan over the church, I can’t see Ubisoft including the structure if it didn’t somehow play a role in the story as a whole. Maybe the theme of religion will be a larger part of the narrative?
I will say, when the trailer finally ends, the whole vibe Far Cry 5 looks more like something out of a horror game than the next installment in this series. Perhaps not down-right scary. Just…unsettling.
Only time will tell. Ubisoft has announced the full, worldwide reveal of Far Cry 5 will be this Friday, May 26th. Check back for more, so we can go through the new information together!
