The Kickstarter for Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes just wrapped up and to say it was successful would be a huge understatement. Rabbit & Bear Studio’s spiritual successor to the Suikoden series brought in ¥481,621,841(roughly $4.5 million USD) during its crowdfunding campaign, which is nearly nine times higher than the original ¥53,808,516(roughly $510,000 USD) funding goal. That makes it the third highest-funded video game Kickstarter in history.
The mammoth sum of money also means that every stretch goal for the project was successfully funded. Some of the goals included console ports, extra mini-games, voiced cutscenes, and localization for additional languages. Since the project met its final stretch goal, a town creation companion game will be developed by Natsume-Atari and “will release before the main game.”
As expected from a successor to the Suikoden series, Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes will feature turn-based JRPG combat and tons of characters to recruit. The story is being written by Yoshitaka Murayama, who also wrote Suikoden I and II. The game will feature 2D character sprites on top of 3D backgrounds, as opposed to the fully 3D production we typically see in crowdfunded projects.
Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes is currently slated to release in October 2022 for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, PC, and the next generation of Nintendo hardware. If a new Nintendo console(or more powerful Switch variant) has not been announced by the time development on the console versions has started, the team will attempt to develop a separate, visually-downgraded version for the current Switch hardware or refund backers if such a version cannot be delivered.
