PC gamers are going to be receiving more PlayStation exclusives soon, starting with Days Gone later this spring. Sony Interactive Entertainment President and CEO Jim Ryan confirmed the news today in an interview with GQ.
After confirming the news, GQ followed up and asked Ryan about PlayStation’s recent decision to release some of their first-party titles on PC and why they had a change in business strategy. Ryan’s answer to the question involves the strength of their first-party studios and the games they produce, as well as the financial aspect of it all.
“There’s an opportunity to expose those great games to a wider audience and recognise the economics of game development, which are not always straightforward. The cost of making games goes up with each cycle, as the calibre of the IP has improved.”
Ryan also says that the ease of being able to make the games for PC led to it being “a fairly straightforward decision” for the company to make.
The first PlayStation Studios title to release on PC was Horizon Zero Dawn last year. Ryan says that the exercise of releasing that game on PC showed them that PC players liked it and bought it, and that there wasn’t a major negative reaction from PS4 owners, so they’ll continue taking steps towards releasing more games on PC.
What is still unknown is whether or not the company will eventually release their games on PC and console simultaneously. If that happens, it likely won’t be for a few years as Sony tries to get PS5 consoles in the hands of as many players as possible with the allure of their standout exclusive titles.
For those lucky enough to have a PS5, Days Gone is currently available as part of the PlayStation Plus Collection, a selection of PS4 games that are free for PS Plus subscribers. Playing it on the next-gen console bumps the game’s frame rate up to 60 fps, making it the best way for new and returning console players to take on hordes of Freakers.
