Call of Duty has topped PS4’s annual download charts for the second year in a row, according to recently revealed data from Sony. Lists for the most downloaded content across PS4, PSVR, Free-To-Play, PS Vita, PS4 Themes and PS Classics in 2018 were made public by Sony and show some interesting patterns in PlayStation’s digital space.
As mentioned, Activision’s blockbuster first-person shooter series took home first place with October’s Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. This achievement comes off the back of Call of Duty: WWII accomplishing the same feat in 2017.
Sony exclusives were particularly elusive on the PS4 chart with only Marvel’s Spider-Man and God of War slotting in at third and fourth place, respectively. Meanwhile, Rockstar enjoyed a healthy year on the PS Store with Red Dead Redemption 2 and 2013’s Grand Theft Auto V both being represented high on the list.
Not surprisingly, Fortnite Battle Royale topped the Free-To-Play chart, while 2016’s Job Simulator was last year’s most downloaded PSVR title.
As digital sales continue to climb across the industry, it is interesting that all ten of PS4’s most downloaded games in 2018 were also released physically. This would suggest a continued migration of consumers purchasing their Triple A games from digital stores.
