Bethesda Details Roadmap for Fallout 76: Everything You Need to Know
Months before the release of Fallout 76, Todd Howard told fans (or warned fans, depending on your level of cynicism) the game would be something that we, as a community, would build together over time. Howard stressed that not only was it a new project for Bethesda to move a Fallout game into the realm of online multiplayer, but it would most certainly be far from perfect at launch and in the months following.
In a fan Q&A during QuakeCon, we got a more in-depth look at what to expect when Fallout 76 launched in October; and in the weeks leading up to the game’s launch, the studio even released a note to fans that addressed mounting concerns about the game.
All of the fair warnings about the state of Fallout 76 did little to prepare everyone for how messy the game was at launch, and the critics did not hold back. Bethesda has released patches for the game since its release, but now the developer has revealed a lengthy roadmap, addressing the current state of Fallout 76 and where it’s going in 2019. There are three major updates planned for this year, titled Wild Appalachia, Nuclear Winter and Wastelanders. Here’s what you need to know.
Wild Appalachia (available Spring 2019):
Wild Appalachia is bringing two new quests, “Shear Terror” and “Ever Upwards”; three new features, “Legendary Vendor and Scrapping”, “C.A.M.P Decorating, Player Vending, Functional Camera”, and “Brewing and Distilling”; a new seasonal event called “Fasnacht Parade”; and a new game mode, “Survival”.

- New Quests: Shear Terror! – Uncover the ‘encryptid’ secrets of Appalachia in a new series of quests and encounters to separate monsters from myths.
- New Quests: Ever Upwards – Journey to the deepest reaches of the woods with new stories for the legendary Pioneer Scouts. Earn merit badges, climb the ranks, and earn a customizable backpack for increased utility.
- New Features: Legendary Vendor and Scrapping – Locate the mysterious Purveyor to exchange and scrap your unwanted legendary items for new legendary gear. For every star rating on a legendary item you scrap, increase your chances to get the legendary weapon or armor of your dreams.
- New Features: C.A.M.P. Decorating, Player Vending, Functional Camera – Use items from your stash to decorate your C.A.M.P. Build vending machines and flag items for sale. Simply set your prices and walk away to continue your adventures in Appalachia, being sure to capture all your favorite memories using the new functional camera. The vending machines do all the work, you just need to count the caps.
- New Features: Brewing and Distilling – Go on a new quest to discover the secrets of the forbidden brew Nukashine and bring the party back to your C.A.M.P with new brewing and distilling systems and recipes.
- New Seasonal Event: Fasnacht Parade – Chase away Old Man Winter and quicken the coming of spring with the ancient festival of Fasnacht! Join the celebration and complete this new limited-time event to earn unique rewards in the form of festive Fasnacht Masks.
- New Game Mode: Survival – This all-new game mode brings a higher-stakes PvP experience with fewer restrictions, increased rewards, and new challenges plus all the original content of Adventure Mode.
Nuclear Winter (available summer 2019):
This second big update releasing this summer will, according to Bethesda, “change the rules of the wasteland.” Nuclear Winter will include two new Vaults (96 and 94) opening up and will allow players to test their skill with high-level group Vault Raids. The game will also be getting a “Legendary Players” feature this summer, a new system that lets players above level 50 reset their characters with all new and more powerful abilities.
Wastelanders (available fall 2019):
There isn’t much information detailed about this third update yet, only that it will be the most ambitious one for Fallout 76 and will feature a new main questline, new factions, and several more “surprises.”
