Battle for Azeroth Becomes WoW’s Fastest-Selling Expansion
Nearly fourteen years after its initial release, World of Warcraft is still a huge success for Blizzard Entertainment.
Via a press release, the studio announced that the game’s latest expansion, Battle for Azeroth, sold more than 3.4 million copies during its first 24 hours of release on August 14th. That makes it the fastest-selling expansion in franchise history and, according to Blizzard, one of the “fastest-selling PC games of all-time.” The game’s previous expansion, Legion, sold 3.3 million copies during its first day of release roughly two years ago.
Battle for Azeroth brings a substantial amount of new content to the celebrated MMORPG. In addition to raising the level cap to 120, players can explore two new continents, Kul Tiras and Zandalar, as well as several new 5-player PVE dungeons. Island expeditions, a new type of PVE/PVP hybrid scenario, were also introduced with the expansion.
As with all previous World of Warcraft expansions, Battle for Azeroth will receive more content in the weeks and months ahead. On September 4th, the Uldir raid will unlock for Normal, Heroic, and Mythic difficulty levels, along with the expansion’s first PVP and Mythic Keystone dungeon seasons. Warfronts, a new type of 20-player cooperative scenario, will release at a later date.
Looking even further into the future, we can expect details for the expansion’s first major patch to be revealed at BlizzCon, which takes place on November 2-3 in Anaheim, CA. A third batch of tickets for the convention recently sold out, but as with previous years, a Virtual Ticket will be offered for fans who want to watch the various panels and community contests online. The BlizzCon opening ceremony, where all of the major announcements are made, will be free to stream online on Friday, November 2nd at 11:00am PDT.
Blizzard recently made a change that makes it much easier for players to start playing World of Warcraft. The World of Warcraft: Complete Collection is now available for $59.99, which includes World of Warcraft, every expansion(including Battle for Azeroth), and a level 110 character boost. Previously, players had to purchase the base game and all expansions separately.
